Ancient Royal Bathing Ponds of Anuradhapura

Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds)

Kuttam Pokuna, the “Twin Ponds,” are two exquisitely engineered bathing pools built for monastic use. With stone steps, terraced walls, and an advanced filtration system, they showcase the hydraulic brilliance of ancient Sri Lanka.

History

Over 2,300 years of continuous devotion

Kuttam Pokuna dates to the Anuradhapura period and is believed to have been constructed for royal or monastic bathing.

The two adjacent pools were designed with sophisticated stonework, including terraced steps, carved spouts, and water-control systems.

Ancient engineering allowed water to flow through a filtration chamber before entering the pools, keeping them clean and usable.

The ponds are linked to the Abhayagiri monastic complex, reflecting the scale and refinement of monastic life.

Today, the twin pools remain among the finest examples of ancient hydraulic engineering in South Asia.
